Carter realized he still had 12 hours to go before reaching his destination, so finding a place to rest for the night became his top priority. He knew there was a truck stop a few hours away, so he decided to push himself to get there. He planned to rest there, get a few hours of sleep, and resume his journey the next morning, hoping that the break would help him make up some of the lost time. But that night, as he lay at the truck stop, Carter was plagued by nightmares. His mind replayed images and thoughts of the girl, and the lingering, unsettling feelings she left behind crept into his dreams.
Around 4 a.m., Carter was woken by the sound of police sirens speeding down the highway. He decided to sleep in his truck, parked on the side of the road, amplifying all outside noise.Normally, Carter could sleep through anything, but the shrill sirens and the unmistakable roar of a dozen police cars speeding past was impossible to ignore. The noise seemed to go on forever, drowning out all other sounds and keeping him awake long after the sirens had died down.
